We get excited about mid-century modern furniture – do you? There’s something special about a design so elegant that it stands the test of time – to be just as popular today at it was decades ago. That’s the focus of the Thayer Coggin & Milo Baughman Road Show, which presents a hand-picked collection of exclusive, timeless designs to select furniture stores across America. Much like an art or jewelry trunk show, guests are treated to informative show dedicated to elegant furniture designs.

An Inspired Mid-Century  Modern Designer and an Important Furniture Manufacturer

The business relationship between furniture manufacturer Thayer Coggin, Inc. and iconic mid-century furniture designer Milo Baughman began in 1953. It was, as they say, a match made in heaven.

J. Thayer Coggin, founder of the furniture manufacturing company, developed a love for fine furnishings at an early age. European design became the inspiration for his furniture of clean lines and light scale while he created innovative engineering processes to produce it. Sleek and horizontal lines became his trademark and a perfect match for the post-war ranch homes so prolific in the U.S. While Thayer Coggin excelled at production, he was missing someone to design contemporary pieces for manufacture.

Milo Baughman was recognized for his California Modern designs in the late 1940s-early 1950s. His style, however, wasn’t quite as popular in New York as it was in California. In seeking to find a furniture manufacturing partner on the east coast, Baughman traveled to North Carolina and met with J. Thayer Coggin, who instantly recognized the beauty of the designer’s unique vision and agreed to begin producing them.

With all the pieces in place, the partnership between Thayer Coggin and Baughman – two of the most important American names in quality furnishings – would produce some of the most iconic designs of the 1950s through the beginning of the 21st century. Some of the most widely recognized pieces from the partners include the Scoop chair, Circle sofa and Drum tables – all of which look just as gorgeous in today’s contemporary homes and offices as when they were first offered by Thayer Coggin, Inc.

About the Thayer Coggin & Milo Baughman Road Show

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the collaboration between Thayer Coggin and Baughman. To celebrate, the company is traveling cross country to present some of its exclusive Baughman designs at select furniture stores.

Lawrance is proud to be one of those chosen few. We are celebrating with a cocktail reception at both of our showrooms. It all starts in our Encinitas location November 13th from 5 to 8 pm. We will be offering light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails to our guests as they enjoy a presentation by Phil Miller, Director of Sales & Marketing for Thayer Coggin, followed by show specials available only during the Road Show. The following night, November 14th, the Road Show moves to our San Diego showroom from 5 to 8 pm.

If you can’t make either Road Show reception, don’t despair. Both Lawrance showrooms will be featuring the Milo Baughman designs included in this exciting event through the end of December.

This is an excellent opportunity to satisfy your thirst for gorgeous mid-century modern designs perfect for the contemporary San Diego home or office. We look forward to showing you the displays that define a generation of classical modern design married with superior functionality. Can we count on seeing you there?
